Paramore Perform New Song ‘Renegade’

During Paramore’s performance in New York City last night for their label Fueled By Ramen’s 15th anniversary concert, the band played a brand new song “Renegade.”

“Renegade” was one of four songs that Paramore recorded in March 2011 with producer Rob Cavallo. The songs were initially intended to be released as an EP, but will instead be released individually online. The first of the set to see an official release was “Monster,” which was featured on the soundtrack to Transformers: Dark of the Moon. An acoustic video of Hayley and Taylor playing another new song “In The Mourning” was released on Paramore.net back in January, shortly after the song was written and before it had been studio recorded. It has since become a regular part of Paramore’s setlist, although the final recording has not been released. That leaves only one song still completely unheard.

No release date for the studio version of “Renegade” has been announced, but Hayley says “we will be putting [it] online for you to have as soon as possible, as soon as we can, we’re working on it.”

Other highlights from the FBR15 performance include an acoustic rendition of “My Heart” and a special mashup of “In The Mourning” with Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide.”

Monster Music Video Premiere

[Flash 10 is required to watch video]
Check out Paramore’s brand new music video for “Monster” directed by Shane Drake.

Hayley wears three very different looks in the video. First we see the most sophisticated look—a floral dress and full-face makeup with dark lips and exaggerated eyelashes. Next up is the most rockin’ look—a matching white ribbed tank and pants with big 80′s crimped hair. Lastly is my personal favorite—a black and white corset inspired top with denim suspender shorts.

Which look is your favorite?

Monster Music Video Filmed

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Paramore news update, so I’ll try to get you all caught up with the news on Paramore’s latest single.

On June 7th, Paramore released their brand new song “Monster,” which is the lead single off the Transformers: Dark Of The Moon soundtrack. This is the first studio recording that we’ve heard from the band as a three-piece act (another song “In The Mourning” was played on tour as well as in an acoustic video). The song debuted this week at #37 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Paramore filmed a music video for the song on Monday June 20th with director Shane Drake and producer Brandon Bonfiglio – the team behind “Pressure,” “Emergency,” “Misery Business,” “CrushCrushCrush,” and “Decode.” The video was shot at Linda Vista Community Hospital in Los Angeles, which is an abandoned hospital that is supposedly haunted. It seems like an awesome backdrop! Here are some photos of the hospital:

Rumor is that part of the video was filmed in a water tank.

So far the only actual photo we’ve seen from the set is of Hayley’s feet – she’s wearing Converse.

If you still haven’t heard the song, or just want to hear it another time, you can listen below:

New Song: In The Mourning

A few weeks ago Hayley posted some lyrics on her tumblr for a song that she had written called “In The Mourning.” Fans were curious about the melody, so Hayley posted a clip of the chorus. Today a video was posted on Paramore.net of Hayley and Taylor playing the song acoustically.

Though Hayley and Taylor have been hard at work writing songs for a new album, this isn’t a Paramore song, just something Hayley wrote for fun. I doubt this song will ever see an official release (though I’m hoping Hayley will post the full recording), which is probably why Hayley chose to share this rather than a Paramore song that they want to surprise us with later.

Paramore Weekly Update: Jan. 3

  • Paramore are at home right now and Hayley and Taylor are working hard on writing new songs. On December 30, Hayley tweeted “Tonight @itstayloryall sent me the 1st official demo for me to write lyrics to. And I am so hopeful and motivated for the future!!”
  • Paramore have announced their fill-ins for their upcoming South American tour. Replacing Josh Farro on guitar will be Taylor York’s brother Justin York. Justin has previously played in Christian rock band Tait and he filled in for Josh on Paramore’s February 2010 Australian tour when Josh stayed home to plan his wedding. Drummer Josh Freese will replace Zac Farro. Freese is a rock veteran who has played in bands such as A Perfect Circle, The Vandals, Devo, Nine Inch Nails, and Guns N’ Roses. He is primarily a session drummer, playing drums for studio recordings, and he has played on close to 300 records. Hayley tweeted that “neither Josh Freese nor Justin York are joining as members, just helping us for the South American tour.”
  • Billboard has announced their 2010 end of year charts.  You can view all of Hayley and Paramore’s placements here, but I’ve listed some of the biggest ones below:
    • On the Hot 100 Singles – which is based on a combination of radio airplay, sales, and online streaming – “Airplanes” came in at #6 and “The Only Exception” at #93.
    • Brand New Eyes scored #94 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart.  The album was released on September 29, 2009 and placed #113 on 2009′s chart.
    • Paramore landed at #82 on the Artists of The Year chart.  This is the first year that Paramore have ever made this chart.  Based on her appearance on “Airplanes” alone, Hayley Williams managed to snag the #91 spot.
  • Hayley bought herself a new laptop – a MacBook Air.  She tweeted: I got a MacBook Air! Now I won’t feel like I’m holding a giant baby when I use my laptop. #smallthingsforsmallpeople”

Happy Birthday Hayley Williams!

Hayley Williams turns 22 today. Happy birthday!

Despite the recent drama, this has been a huge year for Hayley and for Paramore. I hope next year is just as big and drama-free. Here are some of Hayley’s accomplishments this year, it’s quite a lot for someone just turning 22.

  • The Honda Civic Tour was the largest US tour that Paramore have ever headlined headlined, selling out arenas and amphitheaters across the country.
  • “Airplanes” was a worldwide mega-hit reaching #2 in the US, #1 in the UK, and selling over 3 million copies in the US alone.
  • “The Only Exception” became Paramore’s highest-charting single on the Billboard Hot 100 peaking at #24. (“Misery Business” had peaked at #26 in 2007)
  • Hayley is nominated for two Grammy Awards, one for “Airplanes” and one for “The Only Exception.”
  • Brand New Eyes, which was released in September 2009, has continued to sell well and has been certified Platinum in the UK, Australia, and Ireland; and Gold in the US, Argentina, Canada, Germany, Japan and New Zealand.

Josh and Zac’s Exit Statement

Josh and Zac Farro have issued their statement as to why they left Paramore. It seems like there has been tension from the very start of the band. In short: in addition to missing their families, their departure has to do with feeling under-appreciated and like pawns of a major label game.

For the record, I do believe this statement to be true. Back in 2006 when Paramore first got a tour bus, there were rumors that they had a deal with Atlantic, and those rumors were always dismissed in a “how dare you suggest such a thing about Paramore!” sort of way. But ever since Paramore became famous, there have been multiple interviews with the band and label revealing that they have been with Atlantic since day 1 (here’s one). It was only a few months ago that we learned Atlantic was originally interested in signing Hayley as a solo artist, which Hayley confirmed. So I absolutely believe that there are aspects of the origins of the band which are still being withheld from us because it contradicts the image that the band and label want to portray.

It’s not that the band was created for Hayley or that she wants to go solo, on the contrary we see even in Josh and Zac’s statement that Hayley has always wanted to be in a band and has fought all along for Paramore to be together. But these are Hayley’s choices, and it seems like Josh and Zac felt like no one ever cared about their opinions.

update: The statement was posted on an otherwise empty blog, but had been linked to by Josh’s wife Jenna. In response to allegations that the statement was a fake, Josh posted a video confirming that this message is in fact from him and Josh.

Josh also left a comment on the blog which I think sheds a bit of light on things. He says:
“It is simply the truth. YOU GUYS wanted an explanation of why we we’re leaving so there it is. I’m not going to talk about all of the FUN times I had while stating the reason I left the band. Does that make sense? Its nothing personal. Sorry that you feel awful. ”
So I don’t think that he was miserable all along or that he’s always hated Hayley (obviously not, since they dated for 3 years), but since the purpose of his blog is to explain why he left, he only discusses the bad things which led up to him leaving.

Paramore Weekly Update: Dec. 19

  • Josh and Zac Farro have decided to leave Paramore. While obviously this is very disappointing news, it’s clear that Josh and Zac have not been happy with the band’s hectic touring lifestyle, and I hope that all five of them will be happier this way. As Paramore wrote in the announcement, “We want Josh and Zac to do something that makes them happy and if that isn’t here with us, then we support them finding happiness elsewhere.” While the Paramore.net post did not explain any reasons for their departure, if you are looking for reasons I suggest you read this interview from October where the Farros talk about how exhausting touring is (“Some people are cut out for touring and some aren’t. Like Hayley and Jeremy, they can just go and go and go. It’s in their nature. For us, we enjoy a little more time at home just to re-energise.”) and Paramore’s November Kerrang article where Zac said “I feel like I’m missing out a lot. I like being part of my family’s life. I like to see my siblings growing up. I go home and see my little sister and say, ‘Hey! I love you’, or, ‘How are you?’ She just says, ‘Yeah.’ She doesn’t know me. Why would she? She sees me on a poster, I’m never home. That’s what I find hard about being gone so long.” We may hear more from the Farros about why they decided to leave, but for now I think it’s safe to assume that they just want to spend more time with their families, especially with Josh being married.
  • Paramore’s 2011 South American tour will still be happening without the Farros.
  • In an interview with MTV, Taylor announced that Paramore will be taking a break after their South American tour to begin writing a new album. While discussing how “Playing God” will be the last video from Brand New Eyes, Hayley told MTV “I feel great. I feel like … we hit the finish line and we’re golden. I love it. I’m proud.”
  • Guitarist Taylor York celebrated his 21st birthday on December 17th.
  • Brand New Eyes has been certified Gold in Argentina.
  • Hayley shared her picks in a Spin article about the year’s best music. Her favorite album of 2010 is Best Coast’s “Crazy For You” and her favorite song is Arcade Fire’s “Month of May.”
